Before he was Pope, then Cardinal Ratzinger wrote this about the common human reaction to Love in the book “Salt of the Earth” according to America magazine: “Love means being dependent on something that can perhaps be taken away from me, and it therefore introduces a huge risk of suffering into my life…Before having to constantly bear this risk, before seeing my self-determination limited, before coming to depend on some thing I can’t control so that I can suddenly plunge into nothingness, I would rather not have love.”
There’s a number of wonderful insights here, but for now this is what strikes me. In the context of human relationships, it takes great courage to recognize and to leave a bad relationship. But it takes so much more courage to stay committed to a good relationship!
