I heard on the news this morning that a bill was passed by the North Carolina legislature making all same sex marriages and civil unions illegal. One of the supporters of the bill was quoted this morning celebrating the state’s decision to “support the Biblical understanding of marriage.”
So, here’s my question: Is she referring to the view of marriage in the book of Exodus? Where women are presented as a special class of property belonging to their husbands? Or Genesis – where Lot offers the mob outside his door the opportunity to rape his daughters so as not to disturb his angelic visitors? (Granted, that second example isn’t specific to marriage – but it’s hard to imagine that, based on this story, Mr. and Mrs. Lot have a blissful relationship.)
